5 Secrets to Become a Polyglot: Master Multiple Languages

Without communication, human connection is obsolete.

Introverts are very equipped to become polyglots. Learning different languages is just another extension of using their creativity.

Introverts can learn languages from a different angle. This includes pattern recognition, analysis, and creative repetition.

Why should you care about being an introvert polyglot? There are a few things that introverts care about, connecting with others, especially those of a different background, and understanding the world around them.

Undertake Solo Language Learning Activities

Standalone language learning methods pair well with an introvert’s preference for solitude like apps, books, and online resources.

Learning by yourself gives you the freedom to make mistakes without fear of judgment.

Introverts learn best on their own. When they are solo, this is the best time for them to fully grasp concepts and information. The solitude that comes with learning helps clear the mind of mental clutter.

In the beginning stages of language learning, learning at your own pace will help you build momentum and some confidence.

When I started to first learn Brazilian Portuguese, I started with Duolingo. Learning with these apps does have its limitations and you will have to continue to challenge yourself without them but learning by yourself allows you the freedom to mess up as many times as you want.

I currently still have Portuguese teachers but I combine the lessons with language apps to get a better understanding of my weaknesses.

Benefits of Learning Languages Solo:

  • Learning at your own pace is going to override speed. Sometimes classes can distract you from your objective, especially when dealing with social distractions.
  • When learning solo, you can study what interests you. Traditional learning can become boring to introverts. Being creative keeps you freshly motivated.
  • Sometimes finances are a factor. At some point, you will have to invest in yourself but when you are starting, there are many free resources to help you start learning by yourself.

Leverage Online Tutors

Language exchange platforms such as Italki allow learning and practicing new languages from the comfort of home to enhance the language-cultural experience.

In sports, you will play how you practice.

This analogy isn’t any different when it comes to learning languages. Practicing with an online tutor gives you real-world experience with your targeted language. Learning through apps is fine in the beginning but you will have to eventually challenge yourself with a tutor.

To begin the introvert polyglot journey, you must practice conversion skills in your first targeted language.

Ever since I got a Brazilian Portuguese teacher, my competency and confidence in my learning abilities have accelerated.

Benefits of Online Tutors:

  • One of the best ways to learn a language at a fast rate is to immerse yourself in the targeted language.
  • Making friends isn’t easy. Making friends in another country is even harder. Having an online tutor is also a great way to make new friendships or start to build your network.
  • There are many secrets and unwritten rules that language apps can’t teach you that you can only learn from someone who speaks the local language.

Maximize the Use of Media Content

Leverage media content like international films, music, and TV shows as a language-learning strategy.

Learning language from media can be a gift and a curse.

Every country markets itself to foreigners and outsiders. The most powerful way to do this is through the media. Although you can learn certain slang from your targeted language through the media.

There are many avenues in the media where you can learn details of your targeted language.

I once knew a non-English speaker who learned English through Hip Hop music.

I listen to Brazilian Hip Hop music and I recognize words from my studies. This helps me hear these words in a different context than the formal lessons.

You can pick any form of media to add to your language stacking skills.

Music is always in the rawest form because it involves emotion and when emotions are involved, you get to hear how the locals talk and think.

What are some forms of media to enhance your language learning:

  • What is your favorite kind of genre of music? Whatever your target language is, listen to some music in that genre.
  • What kind of movies do you like? Just like your music, you can pick the type of movies you want to watch. This is also another way to understand the local slang.
  • If you are going to doom scroll on social media, translate the language into your targeted language. Make social media fun again. This is another way to understand the local trends.

Introverts are naturally curious about people especially those who are different from them.

This is where being an introvert polyglot becomes fun.
